9th and 10th grade are the years to begin laying the foundation for your college prep and planning success! As soon as you enter the doors of Currin Hall, EVERY GRADE COUNTS! You will begin building that all important transcript from your very first day of high school. Rest assured that you will have the guidance and support of the WYWLA faculty and staff as you begin your high school career.
How can you get off to a GREAT start with your high school career?
How can you get off to a GREAT start with your high school career?
- Get involved with extracurricular activities: This can range from joining after school clubs at WYWLA to volunteering in your community. Athletics are included as extracurricular activities - Remember that WYWLA students can participate in sports at Broughton High School. When selecting extracurricular activities, pick clubs and organizations that you have a true interest in helping out with - as an added bonus, look for activities or organizations that tie into the career or college major that you are interested in pursuing! When it comes to extracurricular activities, go for QUALITY over QUANTITY! Pick a handful of activities to involve yourself with that could eventually lead to leadership positions. And don't forget to keep a record of your activities and service hours! Check out WYWLA's club opportunities and this list of extracurricular suggestions to get started!
- Maintain strong grades: You will begin to build your transcript in your 9th grade year. Your transcript is a record of your final grades in your high school and early college classes. When applying to colleges and for scholarships, you will send a copy of your transcript. Check out the Transcripts tab for more information on what is included in a transcript and how to request a transcript.
- Establish great relationships: Begin to establish strong relationships with your teachers, administrators, counselor and club advisors. These are the folks who you will eventually ask to write letters of recommendation for you as you apply to colleges and for scholarships! College admissions officers want to hear more about you than just the grade that you earned in a particular class - They are looking to see what you contributed to your classroom setting, how you interacted with your peers and if you were particularly passionate about a subject.

Mrs. di Carlo's Freshman Guidance Presentation: I review this presentation on high school expectations and college planning through a series of classroom guidance lessons with freshmen. We also review this four year plan as we review the lesson.
